An abdominoplasty is an operation for removing skin excess and overhang from the front of the tummy.
The procedure may involve tightening up the deep fascia layers of the tummy wall in order to make a slimmer flatter abdomen.
Liposuction is occasionally used to improve results.
The operation is performed under general anaesthetic. The procedure usually takes about 2 hours, and you will be in hospital for between 1 and 3 nights.
Most patients are reasonably comfortable at 1 week. It may be 3-4 weeks weeks before you can drive. The time it takes before you can return to work depends on individual variation, what type of work you do, and the specific type of operation you have. It takes 2 to 3 months before it is safe to return to vigorous physical activity.
You will be left with what is a long scar, which is usually hidden beneath underwear or swimwear. The scar is generally a good tradeoff for what you get in terms of improved tummy shape and appearance.
