I studied Medicine in Cape Town, before moving to London in 1990. I did my basic surgical training in various London hospitals before starting in plastic surgery at St Thomas Hospital.
My training took me through various centres, but I was fortunate to end up at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, where I became a Consultant Plastic Surgeon. As my NHS and private work built up, and being a “family” man and someone with all sorts of other outside interests – it was soon clear to me that I needed to make some important lifestyle changes. I left the NHS in 2007, and now work only in private, building and developing my practice and reputation in Kent.

I am based at the BMI Chaucer Hospital in Canterbury, and the One Hospital in Ashford, but see plastic surgery patients from all over Kent and beyond.
I am not employed by any hospital or group, so can advise you on where may be the best hospital for your surgery, taking into account location, our care needs, facilities, costs etc. I can to a large extent dictate my own practice – I can decide what dressing I want to use, I can decide how many days I’d like you to stay in hospital, I can choose the medical devices, like breast implants, which I believe are best for my patients. I work with Anaesthetists, outpatients, ward and theatre nursing staff whom I know well and who I have now worked with for many years.
There is no selling pressure at all – in fact, quite the opposite. After a consultation I will write a letter summarising our discussion, we will send a quote, and then really it is up you to contact us if you’d like to take things any further. You may call the next week, or you may contact me again in 2 years! It is usual to see you more than once before going ahead with an operation.
I enjoy my interactions and building up a relationship with my patients. Having a cosmetic operation is, I believe, a very personal decision, and I try to be a personal and supportive part of that process, while also being able to provide the highest level of professionalism and surgical care. I see many patients, either uncomfortable after a consultation with another surgeon, or uncomfortable with the pushy and impersonal approaches of the large Cosmetic surgery companies.
The consultation process is central to everything – working out, by talking with my patients, what the best surgical options are, and whether surgery is likely to get a result and achieve what they are ideally wanting. We weigh things up together, all the potential limitations and consequences against what we can realistically achieve. I have no interest whatsoever in carrying out an operation on a patient unless I truly believe that the result will be worthwhile.
With time I have built up more and more of a reputation. I seem to see my previous patient’s friends, mothers, sisters, daughters, brothers, neighbours, aunts, hairdressers, gym instructors, bank managers – the list goes on and on.
Teresa Dimmock, my personal assistant has worked with me from “the beginning”. I am so privileged to have her in the team, and she has huge experience in helping patients through this process. Ask any pervious patients, and they seem to have nothing but praise for her.
I take great pride in the way my practice has built up to what is a busy and successful business, based mainly on personal recommendation.
